I mostly see Valentine’s Day as an excuse to bake heart shaped things. Cakes, scones, biscuits, cookies and cupcakes – I’ve tried them all but my favorite Valentine treat is these custard cream hearts from the cookbook Feast by Nigella Lawson. Feast is the cookbook I always turn to for celebratory holiday recipes. Few of the recipes in this book could be termed healthy, but they are perfect for those times when you want to indulge in a special meal or treat.
Custard Cream Hearts have become a Valentine tradition in our house for the past few years and I’m sure I will make them for years to come. The cookies actually taste more like flaky, buttery pie crust and are sandwiched with a rich, sweet custard-flavored cream filling. Sweet, buttery, heart-shaped goodness = the perfect Valentine!
